Telemedicine in a COVID-19 World

Telemedicine in a COVID-19 World

May 8, 2020

Before the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, telemedicine was growing in acceptance and popularity. A 2018 survey by Deloitte found that almost a quarter of US consumers have had a telehealth visit with a clinician. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there's been a marked increase in that level of acceptance.

In this episode of Tech Talk, three telemedicine experts share their insights into the telemedicine industry. All share their experience navigating the rapid acceleration of the industry amidst the coronavirus pandemic, while explaining their unique perspectives on different aspects of telemedicine and patient care, including the importance of and disparities in digital literacy.

Lisa Di Enno, MD, FAAP is Chief Medical Officer at XpertCare Inc. XpertCare is a telemedicine company that provides pediatric virtual urgent care. Dr. Di Enno is a board-certified general pediatrician with over five years of clinical experience caring for the children of our military’s active-duty personnel. Her time in the Navy has been spent attending deliveries of both well and critically ill babies, providing routine well-care and acute visits for kids of all ages, assisting the ER with emergency consultations, and mentoring trainees at all levels of medical education. Dr. Di Enno understands the unique challenges military children face. She says that COVID-19 has pushed forth the acceptance of telemedicine by three to five years.

Howard Reis is the CEO of The TeleDentists. The only nationwide network of dentists, The TeleDentists provide video consultations for patients with dental emergencies.  Howard has always worked at the intersection of the healthcare and telecommunications industries. He holds an MBA in Finance from NYU's Stern School of Business  and has published several articles on teledentistry, teleradiology, telecommunications and telemedicine.

Danika Tynes, Ph.D. is a senior associate at Georgia Tech Research Institute. Dr. Tynes focuses her work on the advancement and strengthening of global and local health systems, leveraging information technology. Dr. Tynes says that she and her colleagues have watched the adoption and acceptance of telemedicine accelerate exponentially given the COVID-19 response.
